Packing Jewellery for Travel

Unlike clothing, packing jewellery and other similar accessories needs a bit more know-how. It is important to be able to store them properly in your suitcase so that they do not get lost or tangled. To avoid finding valuable pieces strewn about when you arrive at your location, here are some handy tips:

Group all your real and costume pieces into categories to organise everything. Pack rings with other finger ornaments and so on. Make a two-ply blend of tissue paper by combining two single sheets together. Put a single item of jewellery, and then fold over the top flap. Then, turn the piece of tissue paper on its back side, holding the piece inside against the fold. Finally, turn another flap to cushion piece inside. You might need more tissue sheets for chunkier items.

Once all the items have been wrapped in tissue, lay a sheet of bubble wrap on a table. Begin on one end of the sheet. While holding one item to its border, use your thumb and index finger to roll the jewellery inside the bubble wrap. Repeat this procedure a couple of times until you wind the wrap completely into a roll. Secure the ends with a piece of tape to prevent it from unravelling.

Utilise strips of cotton to create a soft insulation for small to medium-size jewellery boxes. You can also use these strips to wrap each piece snugly before securing it with a piece of string. Lastly, use a newspaper when packing large wooden or plastic accessories. If necessary, triple the newspaper for added strength, and staple at the ends to secure.
